BEFORE FLAVIA'S FIELD NOTES
The Cats Who Started It All
Before Flavia's Field Notes, before studying Animal Care, and before cat sitting, there were three cats that inspired my passion for animals.
My love for cats began in 2015, when we welcomed Mittens into our family. We adopted her from a local veterinary practice, never imagining just how much she would shape the years to come.

Not long after we brought her home, Mittens surprised us by giving birth to four kittens on Mother's Day. Although we would have loved to keep them all, we didn't have the space for five cats. Three of the kittens found loving homes with family friends, while one stayed with us, which we called Pinkie.

Watching Pinky grow up alongside her mum was really special. They were inseparable, and caring for them taught me from a young age that every cat has their own unique personality and needs.

A few years later, our family faced one of the hardest decisions any pet owner can make. Mittens developed a serious autoimmune disease that gradually worsened despite treatment. When it became clear that she was suffering, we made the decision to let her go peacefully.
Losing Mittens was incredibly difficult, but it made me appreciate deeply the bond we share with our pets. It reinforced just how much they become part of our families and how important it is to provide them with the best possible care throughout their lives.
Not long afterwards, we welcomed Remi into our home. She had been born to a stray cat, and arrived as a tiny, skinny kitten full of curiosity. Today she's grown into a happy, confident (and slightly chunky!) tabby who keeps Pinkie company every day.

Today, Pinkie and Remi are the best of friends. Despite having completely different personalities, Pinkie being graceful and agile, and Remi being playful and strong, they've created their own unique bond.
Growing up with these cats has played a huge role in shaping who I am. They sparked my passion for animals and ultimately inspired me to study Animal Care at university. They taught me responsibility, compassion, and the importance of understanding that every animal is unique.
Those experiences are also why I care so deeply about the cats I look after today. I know how much trust it takes to leave your pet in someone else's care, and I treat every cat as though they were one of my own.
